Yes, you can use a rental car, a car-sharing vehicle (like Evo or Modo), or a vehicle belonging to a friend or family member, provided it meets ICBC’s safety and documentation standards.
If you are using a vehicle that is not registered in your name, be aware of these rules:
Car-Sharing (Evo, Modo, etc.): If you are not the named account holder, you must provide an official letter from the company authorizing you to use that vehicle for an ICBC road test.
Major Rental Brands: Most large international rental companies (like Hertz or Enterprise) do not allow their cars to be used for road tests.
Local/Independent Rental Companies: There are several independent rental companies near the Richmond city center that do allow or even welcome students using their cars for road tests. You can find these by searching Google; while we are not affiliated with them, they are a popular option for students who do not own a car.
The examiner cannot start the test unless you disable certain technologies. Before they enter the car:
You must turn off all GPS and Navigation systems.
You cannot use any recording devices (Dash Cams) that record audio or video inside the cabin.
According to ICBC, your vehicle must be safe, reliable, and properly insured. If the vehicle isn't safe (e.g., seatbelts are not working, or there is an outstanding serious safety recall), the examiner may have to cancel your test.
Cracked or illegally tinted windshield or windows.
Dash warning lights (e.g., air bag) that affect safe operation.
Seatbelts not working or frayed.
Brake lights, signal lights, or headlights not working (or with badly cracked/missing lenses).
Interior of vehicle is not clean or contains items that may affect health or safety.
Unsafe or illegal vehicle modifications.
Horn not working.
Unsafe tires.
Doors or windows not operating (e.g., doors don't open from inside).
Gas tank or electric charge too low.
