In Richmond, 30 km/h signs can be small, faded, or partially hidden by trees. Many students fail because they enter a zone at 50 km/h simply because they didn't see the start of the zone. On the road test, there is zero tolerance: speeding in a School zone or Playground zone marked with a 30 km/h limit is an automatic fail.
The two main zones you must distinguish are:
School Zones (Pentagon Shape): Usually 30 km/h from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days only.
Playground Zones (Diamond Shape): 30 km/h from dawn to dusk, every single day of the year.
A common reason for points deduction is speeding up before the zone has actually ended. If you can't see the "End of Zone" sign clearly, we teach you to look for the back of the sign on the opposite side of the road.
Look at the left side of the street for the back of the sign facing oncoming traffic when you approach the end of the School Boundary or Playground.
Once your car passes the back of that sign, the zone has ended.
This confirms you are clear to resume 50 km/h without guessing.
NOTE: Some playground or school zones have a "Reduce Limit Ahead" sign (a Speed Limit sign with an up arrow). In our lessons, we go through these details and visit the specific zones near the Richmond road test center to show you all the variations of these signs.
Students often assume school zones don't apply in July or on weekends. However, some Richmond schools host summer sessions or have specific playground signage that remains active.
At Bayview, we don't ask you to guess the calendar. We teach you:
Scan for the speed limit sign: If there is a "30 km/h" sign under the School Zone/Playground sign, you must obey the speed limit during the active hours.
Assume the Worst: If you see children nearby, even outside of "active" hours, we teach you to cover the brake and reduce speed to show the examiner you are prioritizing safety over the limit.
You will fail your test immediately if you:
Enter the zone at more than 30 km/h.
Fail to identify a playground zone on a weekend or holiday.
Speed up to 30 km/h plus before passing the end of the zone. There is no "5 km/h grace period" on a road test—31 km/h is a speeding violation.

At Bayview, we train you to spot these zones far away before you enter them, so you already adjust your speed before your front tires cross the sign.
